Jewish Life on Campus
|
At Northwestern University, students, staff, and the community will find a dynamic and engaging Jewish world. From the religious to the cultural, there are avenues to fulfill every Jewish need. At the center of this world is the Fiedler Hillel. To bring in Shabbat, Hillel offers Friday night services, with student-led Reform, Conservative and Orthodox prayer services available and a communal dinner. Hillel celebrates the Jewish holidays throughout the year with services, fun festivities, and meaningful get-togethers. Check the website frequently for more information as holidays approach. The strong Jewish presence at Northwestern also guarantees a plethora of food options. Students enjoy Friday night dinners after services while mingling with the Shabbat crowd. For additional kosher alternatives, head to Allison dining hall, where kosher meals are available Monday through Thursday for lunch and dinner. Click here for weekly menus. Plus, for those on the go, pre-made kosher sandwiches are offered on campus at Tech Express. Looking to take an active role in Hillel? There are numerous ways to channel your Jewish interests. Choose from a diverse menu of student groups that cover everything from religious observance, to Israeli culture and awareness, to social action, to musical and theater performance. Get your ideas out there with schmooze magazine, a student-run publication that covers many aspects of Jewish life from the serious to the seriously absurd. Click here to request a complimentary issue. Students can also nurture their Jewish identities on the greater Northwestern campus. The fraternities Alpha Epsilon Pi and Zeta Beta Tau meld brotherhood with Jewish life. The Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies adds offers both a major and minor in Jewish Studies, and a wide array of courses in Jewish history, text, philosophy, and culture. For a Jewish experience beyond Evanston, Hillel offers exciting opportunities to get away and bond with Jewish students. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime week on a Jewish-oriented Alternative Spring Break or visit Israel with an unforgettable free 10-day trip on Birthright Israel. Ten days not enough? Spend a semester in the Holy Land studying abroad at Hebrew University or Ben-Gurion University. These opportunities allow students to travel the globe with a Jewish twist and expand their horizons at the same time. Hillel is also proud to work with our other Jewish partners on campus, including the Tannenbaum Chabad House and Meor Northwestern, which provide a host of activities and resources.
