Tikkun Olam Task Force

The Tikkun Olam Task Force volunteering at A Just Harvest

The Tikkun Olam task force is a student group that works to bring together the larger Jewish community at Northwestern to participate in both direct and indirect community service. The Force provides community service opportunities but also supports and helps to facilitate any community service passions NU students are interested in pursuing. We strive to encourage others not only to participate in social action, but to also reflect upon their experiences through a Jewish lens.

"A Just Harvest" Indeed
By: Jennie van den Boogaard

I never really thought about homelessness and hunger until recently. Sure, I've seen the beggars and vagabonds my whole life, but the desperate inequality of being homeless and hungry never made it into my day-to-day conscience, or even my philanthropic ambitions.

By joining the Tikkun Olam Task Force, I began to think about the millions of Americans that go hungry consistently. How can a society as wealthy as ours turn our backs on the unluckiest? My Intro to Social Policy class has only deepened my concern over homelessness and hunger. I've learned the numbers and statistics that would shame anybody into combating hunger.

Especially when you see the numbers jump off the page, at incredible places like A Just Harvest, where you can't help but be moved to action. A Just Harvest has inspired me to be more cognizant of hunger in America and the world around us. You can pass it every day on the street and never fully acknowledge the injustice right before your eyes. Or you can get motivated to do something, something more than donating some change here and there. And that's what Tikkun Olam is all about. We're going to give back our time, the most valuable form of philanthropy, to those that need it most.
